North Korea's recent flurry of missile launches has raised expectations that it could soon test a nuclear device for the first time since 2017. Here is what foreign officials and analysts have said about when and why North Korea might resume testing
for a test could be between the Chinese Communist Party congress, which begins on Oct. 16, and the midterm elections in the United States on Nov. 7, South Korean lawmakers briefed by its spy agency said last month.
The most recent flurry of missile tests involved units meant to operate tactical nuclear weapons, including a pair of "strategic" cruise missiles launched on Wednesday, according to North Korean state media. "They've only conducted a pretty limited number of nuclear tests," said Vann Van Diepen, a former Korea expert with the U.S. government who now works with the 38 North project. "And any weapons developer... would want to have a lot more tests under their belt to have the highest possible confidence that these weapons are going to work."
