A cold end to January
After weeks of cold, ice and rain, snow is expected to fall across the county later this month. The weather has been mild since freezing conditions before Christmas, though the rain has persisted throughout.
The Met Office is expecting unpleasant conditions to continue over the coming week, with some hail and thunder likely to be seen on Monday and winds gradually strengthening throughout the day and frost possible. Its forecast for the rest of the week says: "Mild, wet and drab on Tuesday with persistent rain and drizzle. Showers and blustery winds on Wednesday. Further rain on Thursday. Generally staying windy with coastal gales.
Those wintry conditions will involve snow, according to the experts at Accuweather. The forecaster is expecting snow to hit Lancashire in the last days of the month. It predicts that snow will hit on January 29 and 30. The Met Office has recently reported that 2022 was the hottest year on record with "human-induced climate change" attributed as the cause. Dr Mark McCarthy, head of the Met Office National Climate Information Centre, said: “The warm year is in line with the genuine impacts we expect as a result of human-induced climate change.
