Former Woodmere mayor and Florida Marlins pitcher Charles Smith will spend nearly 3 years in federal prison for buying 100s of stolen credit card numbers off the dark web in order to pay for more than $10,000 worth of gas for his Amazon delivery truck.
Charles Smith, a former starting pitcher for the Florida Marlins and mayor of the small Cleveland suburb Woodmere, was sentenced Thursday to federal prison for using information from hundreds of stolen credit card accounts to buy gas while he delivered packages for Amazon.
Boyko chastised Smith for breaking the public’s trust at a time when many Americans are increasingly distrustful of government officials, for Smith’s use of the dark web and for stealing from unsuspecting people. He grew up in Cleveland with two loving parents, graduated from John Adams High School in 1988 and had no substance abuse or mental health issues.
“It’s heartbreaking to have an individual who’s supposed to be one of the best in our community to come in here and say that he acted out of desperation,” Doroodian said. “That’s unacceptable. It was absolutely greed.” Smith served as the mayor of the tiny eastern Cleveland suburb from 2009 to 2017. He returned to city government as a city councilman in 2019, about the same time when investigators said he started his scheme.
