Former Crusaders goalkeeper Terry Nicholson played 80 minutes for Donacloney Reserves at the weekend

A former Irish League goalkeeper proved age is just a number with a remarkable competitive comeback win at the weekend.

The veteran shot-stopper approached the club about playing another swansong after celebrating his 80th birthday back in January. And on Saturday he played 80 minutes before being substituted to rapturous applause from both teams and fans.Nicholson - who played for Crusaders and managed Glenavon - also played for Donacloney Reserves a decade ago after turning 70. On that occasion the game ended in a 5-5 draw, with the legendary keeper saving a penalty within the first 10 minutes.

"Terry started for our Reserves in a 5-3 league win against Lisburn Youth. He was then subbed off after 80 minutes to get his moment in the spotlight, receiving a round of applause from both teams and all present as he was replaced by our regular keeper Jason Lavery.Octogenarian Nicholson kept a clean sheet to help Crusaders beat Linfield in the 1968 Irish Cup final, and went on to spend almost a decade as manager of Glenavon, helping the Lurgan Blues clinch the League Cup in 1989.
