A Firestone police corporal sexually harassed a subordinate officer and forced her out of her job and profession, the officer alleges in a new federal lawsuit.
Rochelle Orlando joined the Firestone Police Department on Feb. 25, 2019, as a community service officer with hopes of furthering her dream to become a crime scene investigator, according to the lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court against the town of Firestone.
“Corporal Ross felt empowered to engage in this kind of conduct due to the culture within the Town of Firestone police department wherein women’s bodies were routinely commented upon, women were subjected to extremely derogatory statements and then told that if they could not handle the sexual harassment and discrimination, they would lose their employment,” according to the lawsuit.
In April 2020, Ross called Orlando to the forensic lab to look at crime scene photos. While looking at the photos, Ross grabbed Orlando and kissed her, the lawsuit states. The sexual harassment escalated and came to officials’ attention after police were called to Orlando’s home when her husband confronted Ross about the sexual activity, according to the lawsuit. Both Ross and Orlando were placed on administrative leave.
