The cause of athlete's foot is a fungal infection, but just how does one contract a fungal infection on the feet? "Athlete's foot is very contagious," Zeichner says. "The fungus can be spread through direct contact."
Sutera adds that athlete's foot is easily spread by contact with an infected surface such as the gym shower, hotel rooms, pools, shared bathrooms, carpets, and pedicure tools. The fungus also favors and grows easily in moist, damp conditions — like sweaty socks trapped in poorly ventilated shoes — which is why it's often experienced by athletes. "In some cases, the fungus can actually live in moist environments such as the shower floor," Zeichner explains. In general, a "warm, moist environment promotes growth of fungus," he says.
You're generally more susceptible to developing athlete's foot if you regularly wear your sweaty workout socks and sneakers for long periods of time, or if you walk barefoot in any of the aforementioned areas, such as the gym, the locker room, or the wet area around a public swimming pool.After it's contracted on the feet, the infection can easily spread to other parts of the body, most often the hands, toenails , and the groin area, Sutera says.
