Everton talking point from Chris Beesley after the incredible 3-2 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park

Dropped following the return to fitness of Amadou Onana, Idrissa Gueye came off the bench to produce something we haven’t seen from him in an Everton shirt for a long time to become their most unlikely of heroes.

Ever since the start of his first spell at Goodison Park back in 2016 under Ronald Koeman, Blues have known all about what the Senegalese international is highly-accomplished at - namely providing a defensive shield in front of his back four and putting out fires. He was so talented at doing football’s dirty work that for a time he was asked to go and perform such a role for petrodollar-fuelled Paris Saint-Germain as a water carrier for the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Now 34 years of age and playing in an Everton side that has been struggling, Gueye hasn’t reached the kind of levels expected from him first time around and while he’s still a dogged performer, those deficiencies have been highlighted more, especially his sometimes wayward passing and shooting. Not at Selhurst Park, though, as he incredibly seemed to roll all of that much-vaunted former PSG ‘holy trinity’ into one with a slickly-taken one-two with Abdoulaye Doucoure before firing home the winner with a left-foot shot.

The sensational winner sent the travelling Evertonians who had made the long trek down to Croydon into raptures and who can blame them. It was a goal and a result as welcome as it was perhaps unexpected with maybe Gueye himself the most surprised of all?
