The Premier League's domestic TV rights go out to tender for a four year cycle imminently
Everton and Liverpool could receive a major financial boost with the next cycle of television rights set to go out to tender.
The strength of the broadcasting rights deals have underpinned the financial muscle of the Premier League for a number of years, with England’s top tier competition delivering far higher revenues than Spain’s La Liga, Germany’s Bundesliga, the Italian Serie A, and France’s Ligue 1, with a differential of three to one in the case of Italy and France.
For the domestic rights over the current period, the £5bn deal was rolled over at the same value as the previous three years, something that was seen as a success at the time given that it was negotiated during the pandemic and the the uncertainty that existed around live sport and the appetite for it at the time.
The extra year is significant. Sky Sports, BT Sports and Amazon Prime Video were the three broadcasters to secure the tender for the last rolled over cycle, but the short timeframe of three years means that it is a costly exercise for potential new players in the market to come on board given the major start-up costs required and the requirement to tender once again relatively shortly after.
