Even amid low unemployment, many workers are still struggling to find a job

Employers are still reluctant to hire more workers and many workers face greater economic pressures to work longer than they did in the past. They are, for instance,. But not all is working out well for American workers. The average length of unemployment spells has stayed relatively high. In September, unemployed workers were looking for a job for an average of 22.0 weeks, which is still above the 16.6 weeks recorded in December 2007 when the Great Recession started. It is also well above the less than 13 weeks in 1999 when the unemployment fell below four percent the last time.
