Evacuation ordered for residents cut off by Eagle River avalanche
The avalanche that came down across Hiland Road near Eagle River, shown on Sunday, March 27. The slide occurred late Thursday and has cut off around 100 homes, according to city officials. for residents in an Eagle River area near a massive avalanche that cut off about 100 homes since late Thursday. Officials were preparing to trigger remaining snowpack on the mountainside above Hiland Road.
The remaining snow was in danger of coming down on its own, officials said, and they were scrambling to get residents between Milepost 7.0 to 7.9 of Hiland Road out of the area before triggering the remaining snow with explosives dropped from a helicopter. Officials couldn’t ensure residents’ safety unless they were out, Demboski said.
