In a speech advocating for EU membership, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for Ukraine to be immediately admitted under a 'new special procedure.'
just the day before, asking for fast-track admittance due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which entered its sixth day on Tuesday. Being part of the bloc would allow Ukrainians to move freely between the other 27 member nations, which could help the hundreds of thousands of people fleeing the country as Russian forces continue to fire upon major cities.
The vote does not immediately make Ukraine an EU member, but it starts the process. Generally, joining the bloc is a lengthy process, as a country has to satisfy a series of conditions called the"Copenhagen criteria." This includes"a free-market economy, a stable democracy and the rule of law, and the acceptance of all EU legislation, including of the euro," according to the EU's website.
