As the European Commission plans to charge Amazon over the alleged unfair use of data gathered from third-party sellers, antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager may already be lining up the next salvo, writes rob_cyran.
The European Commission plans to file formal antitrust charges against Amazon.com as early as next week, the Wall Street Journal reported on June 11. The commission will allege the e-commerce giant used data from third-party sellers to compete against them by launching similar products, according to the report. If the company is found to have violated European antitrust law, the commission can fine Amazon up to 10% of annual revenue or require it to adopt other measures to comply.
The European Commission has ongoing probes of Alphabet unit Google and Facebook. It has fined Google over $9 billion for multiple antitrust abuses since 2017.
