Pep Guardiola made the call to start Erling Haaland for Manchester City's game against Young Boys, and the striker responded
Manchester City's top scorer scored another two to down Young Boys in a game that he really didn't need to start. That he did, and produced what he did, says a lot about him and the team that he represents.
It may be that Guardiola wanted to make the point about the importance of Champions League qualification. He has spoken enough times about the prestige that it brings and wrote proudly in his programme notes about the chance to make it 11 straight group stage progressions for the club in this competition.
Starting Haaland in this game said a lot about the player's fitness, too. It was just a day after Guardiola had declared his No.9 free from injuries and not in need of a rest that he had fallen down against Bournemouth, yet the fact he has been able to rise again so quickly is testament to a fitness that wasn't guaranteed when he arrived with problems and an injury record from Dortmund last season.
Just after the bin bags had been launched, Matheus Nunes was sent flying in the penalty box after a clever turn. City finally had the opportunity to mark their dominance on the scoresheet, and Haaland duly obliged from the spot.
