“Now I can look back and be like, wow, that was a really cool moment,” she said. “But at the time, I definitely don’t think I appreciated [the personal best] or really took a mental note of how far I’d come.”In May, Kemp ran another significant personal best in the 5,000 meters when she finished third in 15:10.10 at the Platinum PT Qualifier in Boston. But when Kemp saw how close she was to hitting the 15:10.00 Olympic standard, she felt diminished by the near-miss.
“After that 5K final, I was just emotionally and physically spent and just like, not really that excited to be there anymore,” Kemp said. “The Trials is an important race. There’ll be another one in three years, but there’s a load of other races that Erika can be competitive in,” Carroll told. “A lot of it is going out and giving your best on the day and we have to be okay with that. We have to accept the outcomes, but then you pick up and move on to the next one.”
“I don’t think I was really taking enough time for myself because I was so tired and so focused on training and chasing these standards and trying to do well at the Trials,” she said. “I just wasn’t really living the other parts of my life, just really neglecting them and not putting enough time into the rest of me and what makes me myself.”
In their approach for the summer and fall racing season, Carroll and Kemp worked on setting goals for a long-term approach aimed to keep the process enjoyable while she gets stronger. Instead of chasing times on the track, they put road races on the calendar and are trying out new, longer distances with the hope that higher mileage will benefit her in the 2022 track season and beyond heading into the next Olympic cycle.
