Afghanistan pull off the biggest shock of the tournament so far
World Cup hopes are hanging by a thread after they were on the receiving end of the first shock of the tournament, losing toLoose bowling and inspired batting from opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz helped Afghanistan get off to a lightning start after England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and opted to bowl first.
Gurbaz was eventually run out on 80 during a collapse that saw England pick up three for eight in 14 balls. Spin strangled the momentum of the innings before the seamers – three for 189 in 25.5 overs – allowed the game to run away from them again as Afghanistan fell just four short of their highest World Cup total of 288. The best of Joe Root’s four catches – racing around from long on to take a spectacular diving effort off Adil Rashid to dismiss Rashid Khan in the 45The 21-year-old opener set the tone with a wonderful innings of 80 in 57 balls that took full advantage of England’s woeful bowling. It was a knock that made the improbable seem very much on and was the key contribution to a momentous victory.
