With summer fast approaching families and friends will be planning trips to the beach in the coming months. Yet it can be tricky knowing where has the cleanest water for swimming, which is where the Blue Flag award can come in handy.
It's an international award given to beaches, marinas and inland bathing waters which met its high standards for cleanliness. This year a total of 72 beaches across the country received a Blue Flag Award. Two beaches - Sandbanks in Poole and Oddicombe in Torbay, Devon - have scooped the Blue Flag award every year since it was launched 37 years ago. The Royal Albert Dock and Salthouse Dock in Liverpool was awarded a Blue Flag, the only marina in England to secure the accolade.If you want to find the nearest Blue Flag beach to you then you can use our interactive map below. Unfortunately no beaches in the North West received a Blue Flag Award. However, 10 beaches within the region secured Seaside Awards which are 'presented to the best beaches in England'. The awards, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, acknowledge the quality of the sites, the management of the beaches and facilities which are available. A total of 136 beaches and one inland bathing water received Seaside Awards across England. Both Blackpool South and Blackpool Central beaches bagged a Seaside Award, while Morecambe South Beach and St Annes Pier also received the award.
