Manchester United and England legend Sir Bobby Charlton, who was among the football squad who won the 1996 World Cup, had died at the age of 86 after a battle with dementia
A statement from the family said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was surrounded by his family.
"His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him. We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time."In 2020, it was revealed he had been diagnosed with dementia. A statement from Manchester United read at the time: “Everyone at Manchester United is saddened that this terrible disease has afflicted Sir Bobby Charlton and we continue to offer our love and support to Sir Bobby and his family.”
