On Monday, a warrant was obtained from Workington Magistrates' Court to gain access to the property

Structural engineers have been able to gain access to the Old Courthouse in Cockermouth after the council was granted a warrant to gain entry.Cumberland Council said it needed access to the building as assessments had to be carried out urgently. The Old Courthouse hasn't been used since 2021 and is about 190 years old.The council said it informed the owner of the property that they required access and would soon be serving a further notice using section 54 of the Planning Act 1990.

The Old Courthouse is a Grade II listed building, and the council is in ongoing discussions with partners including Historic England. Agencies are continuing to work together to protect public safety. Access is required to the site to undertake further survey work which will inform how and what works can be undertaken.
