Customers can be charged up to £150 for having a prepayment meter force-fitted – including £56 for the warrant application.one court in Northern England granted 496 warrants, which allow firms to force entry into homes in just three minutes and 51 secondsIt can now be revealed using Ministry of Justice data that the granting of the warrants has more than doubled from 174,000 in 2018 to 367,000 last year with the number of magistrates’ refusals falling from 2,800 to only 56.
Industry sources insist that the majority of all domestic forced entries are for fitting a prepayment meter. “It is days since Grant Shapps said he would take action, but Rishi Sunak and his Government continue to stand by and do nothing.”Fuel poverty campaigners fear families are being failed by a “murky” court process after Justice Minister Mike Freer told the Justice Committee in a letter it is “extremely rare” for energy customers to contest the warrants and that the ministry has no data on how often it happens.
