The Mavericks have the league’s 10th-worst record, but another loss would ensure they don’t end up in a tie with the Bulls or Thunder if they don’t win their final games. With the 10th-worst record, Dallas would have a 13.9 percent chance to move during the draft lottery into a top-four selection and a 3 percent chance at the top spot.
In light of that, Friday’s decision was the pragmatic one for the team’s future — to do the statistical work to stave off further embarrassment because being embarrassed is bad but wallowing in shame is worse. It’s not like it’s unfamiliar, mind you.
So, even with one game left to play, this is how this Mavericks season ends. Or, rather, this is how the Mavericks’ summer begins, one that has enormous implications on the franchise’s future and whether Doncic can finally be vindicated with the players he needs around him to succeed in ways that it’s obvious he can. Good luck, and good riddance, to one of the strangest years of basketball any of us have ever seen.
