New powers to tackle the housing crisis have been handed to local authorities
People who own an empty house in Greater Manchester could see their Council Tax bill double from this month, as new powers to tackle the housing crisis are handed to local authorities by The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.
These new powers granted to local councils could affect 130,000 second homeowners nationwide when implemented and push some into selling up or renting out their vacant properties. But, with there being a number of reasons that a home might remain empty, the government has created three main exemptions to the double charge.These exemptions mainly cover those who are unable to live in their second property.
Properties that have been empty for more than a year while undergoing major repairs or structural alterations will now have to pay full Council Tax, with the charge doubling after five years, and tripling after 10. Empty annexes will also be charged in full from when it is vacated.
