Stone stars as a Frankenstein-like woman in the Yorgos Lanthimos film.
centers on the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter , a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter . Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn , a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
In a featurette for the film released on August 30, Stone says Bella’s arc is understanding what it means to be a member of society, and a woman. That means sex, and lots of it. “Bella’s sexuality is an incredibly important part of the story,” Stone says. “The human experience is fascinating to her, and sex is a major part of that.
“I wanted to play Bella because it felt like acceptance of what it is to be a woman, to be free, to be scared and brave,” Stone adds.
