She’s right.
After they save each other’s lives, Cornelia convinces Eli to go with her to Wyoming, where she has heard her target is living. Their alliance turns to friendship, which turns to romance. Written and directed by Hugo Blick , it is a slow, detailed series – that rare show that doesn’t lend itself to a binge.movies, to the role? “I needed a gig,” he says with a laugh. It wasn’t just that of course. “I love meaty beast roles, and I was attracted to the heaviness of what he carried,” he says.
That was a struggle for Spencer. “He’s so colourful as a person,” says Blunt. “He’s buoyant. It was kind of extraordinary for me to see him transform, and this stillness. That was captivating.” She stops herself from rambling on. “Anyway, that’s my love letter to Chaske Spencer.”Considering Spencer was “intimidated” by Blunt when they first started working on, more than a year later the pair are like magnets, and that chemistry bleeds into every scene they share in.
“It’s unusual in westerns – she’s not tied to a tree,” says Blunt. “When she shows up in her pink dress and bonnet, the image of the Victorian feminine ideal, you think she’s never going to make it.” But she does. “Even after such horrific trauma and loss, she’s hopeful,” adds Blunt. “She’s the most courageous person I’ve ever come across. I wish I could be more like her.”
