Menendez had faced expulsion from the Senate after Democrats and Republicans called for his ouster over his crimes, which included acting as a foreign agent for Egypt.The news network, citing two sources familiar with the senator’s plans, said Menendez appears to be relenting to mounting pressure to resign.
The senior Democratic senator from New Jersey was convicted Tuesday on bribery charges following a nine-week federal trial in Manhattan. Two New Jersey businessmen were also convicted of bribing the senator. A third pleaded guilty to bribing Menendez and his wife, Nadine. Prosecutors said the Menendez couple accepted lavish gifts and bribes of gold bars in exchange for political favors. He was convicted of illegally working for the Egyptian government.“I have never violated my public oath. I have never been anything but a patriot of my country and for my country,” he told reporters after the verdict.GUILTY: N.J. Sen.
