P is for protest.
The show, moderated by Big Bird, CNN political commentator Van Jones, and national correspondent Erica Hill kicked off with an important conversation between Elmo’s dad, Louie, and his beloved son. “Daddy, Elmo doesn’t understand. What’s happening, why are these people together,” Elmo asked as protestors walked by his home chanting, “Black lives matter.” Louie explained that people are protesting. “Protest? Elmo doesn’t understand,” the Muppet asked.
Louie responds to Elmo’s question by explaining protestors are people who “come together to show they are upset and disagree about something—they want to make others aware of the problem.” Louie adds, “Through protesting, people are able to share their feelings and work together to make things better.”Elmo then asks his dad if the protesters are sad. “They are sad and upset, and they have every right to be, Elmo,” Louie explains. “People are upset because racism is a huge problem in our country.
“Not all streets are like Sesame Street. On Sesame Street we all love and respect each other,” Louie continued. “But across the country, people of color, especially in the Black community, are being treated unfairly because of how they look, their culture, race, and who they are. What we are seeing is people saying ‘enough is enough.’”
Elmo responds, “Elmo wants to end racism too.” When he asks his father what he can do to support his friends, Louie explains, “Well, we can start by learning and talking about what is happening and take action.”
