First Look: Elizabeth Olsen is Candy Montgomery in ‘Love & Death,’ the true story of an ’80s Texas housewife who was accused of brutally killing her neighbor with an axe.
confirms the miniseries has “a slight Coen brothers” vibe to it—“a weird, Middle America sort of tone.”Candy prepares an extravagant homemade lunch for each illicit meetup with Allan. She takes delight in the seediness of their motel rendezvous—a far cry from the wholesomeness she’s long created at home. Candy engineers domestic perfection so effortlessly in her own household that she tries to create a business doing it for others, attempting to build up an interior design company.
Olsen looked back to the women covering magazines in the late ’70s and early ’80s to see who Candy might look up to. “It’s hard not to think aboutat that moment in time, especially for a woman who had hopes and dreams of being something more than a wife and a mother and a caretaker…. I also thought about Hillary when it came to hairstyle, because there’s this [mugshot of Candy with a perm]. But we know people don’t necessarily have perms for two years straight because their hair would fall out.
