In 2020, 67% of voters in Alabama opted to cast a straight-ticket ballot. But there are 10 Alabama constitutional amendments that won't be affected by a straight-ticket vote. You'll need to mark those if you want to vote on them.
It’s a trend that’s held fairly consistent in past state elections and one that’s likely to continue in Tuesday’s mid-terms.
Straight ticket voting, also called straight party voting, allows voters to choose a party’s entire slate of candidates with just a single ballot mark, Alabama Secretary of State’s Office explains. In doing so, voters make one mark or selection on the ballot in order to vote for every candidate of that party for each partisan office on the ballot.
In Tuesday’s midterms, Alabama voters can opt for a straight Democratic, Republican or Libertarian Party ticket.Alabama is one of only six states -Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Oklahoma, and South Carolina are the others - that offer straight-party voting.Yes, according to the Alabama Secretary of State:
“If a voter wishes to vote for any candidate outside of the selected party, however, he or she may do so by filling in the bubble next to the preferred candidate’s name. In doing so, the candidate voted on outside of the voter’s designated party ballot will receive the vote for that particular race.”Straight-ticket voting won’t impact decisions on Constitutional Amendments. A voter would have to mark those separately but you are not required to vote on those or any other office.
