New VIP+ Analysis: The new FromSoftware game is immensely popular, with George R.R. Martin’s involvement making all the difference.

Then there’s the two big Marvel games from Square Enix over the last two years, “Marvel’s The Avengers” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” thatof the Japanese publisher’s sales expectations. It shows that shelling out money to license such IP may not be worth it if these games aren’t developed in collaboration with the same creative talent that made the IP worthwhile in the first place.

Unlike prior FromSoftware games, “Elden Ring” takes place in a vast open world, representing a clear strategy shift for the studio and a desire to open its games to wider audiences without tarnishing its firm stance on challenging combat. FromSoftware games such as Activision’s “Sekiro,” Sony Interactive Entertainment’s “Bloodborne” and the “Dark Souls” series have always been known for their exceptional difficulty and challenging bosses, which has long made their games the subjects ofregarding wider accessibility in gaming. Despite FromSoftware’s track record for critical acclaim, this means their games typically haven’t broken through to consumers to the degree that “Elden Ring” has.

But “Elden Ring” had serious competition throughout February when it came to open-world games, two of which were highly anticipated sequels. First was zombie-parkour actioner “Dying Light 2” from Techland on Feb. 4, followed by “Horizon Forbidden West” from SIE on Feb. 25. That latter franchise isIt’s not like smaller companies in Hollywood are ignoring this opportunity to foster collaboration with creators.
