Man Utd have played well for parts of their Champions League campaign but are now bottom of their group and have conceded 11 goals in four games.
For 28 minutes in Munich, it was all going so well for Manchester United. For 71 minutes against Galatasaray at Old Trafford, they were back in control of their European destiny and twice in Copenhagen, they were doing what was required of them. Then the first card fell and the rest collapsed under the slightest breeze.
Against Galatasaray at home they were the better team for three-quarters of the game and deserved a 2-1 lead at that stage. Then they conceded twice in 10 minutes - while also conceding a penalty that was missed - and have had their backs to the wall ever since. These are astonishing acts of self-sabotage from individuals who have shown the character to make it to the top of the game but collectively are unable to cope with even the smallest of setbacks when playing for United. You can't make a serious assault on going deep in the Champions League when conceding one goal normally brings another soon after it.
The most disappointing aspect of the defeat in Denmark is that for so much of the night, this really did feel like a turning point. Not in the way the players said the wins against Brentford, Sheffield United and Fulham were. They were unconvincing wins built on flaky performances.
