The historic school educated Fourth Ward students for more than 100 years.
We encourage anyone who hasn’t visited to not only read the marker, but head inside to learn more. The story of the Gregory School — how it came to be, what led to its closure and how it has lived on as the neighborhood itself has fought to do so — encapsulates much of the story of Houston itself, following the contours of how community exists and persists within larger structures of power and profit.
Originally opened on Jefferson St., the Gregory School was part of several of the most major moments in Houston and American history. Founded by the Freedman’s Bureau after the Civil War, the school represented a new era and reflected the hunger for education after enslavement. When the Freedmen’s Bureau left town, the community had to organize on the school’s behalf.
It was a place of connection and learning, that left an impression on everyone who attended. Decades later, the school was closed down as part of the school district’s long, slow process of desegregation.
