With Republicans now in the majority in the House, Reps. Chip Roy, who represents part of San Antonio, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and others like them can leverage what was once a routine procedure for political and policy concessions — with potentially disastrous consequences.
But House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who made major concessions to the House Freedom Caucus, and other Republicans have said they will not vote for raising the debt ceiling unless President Joe Biden agrees to major spending cuts. Using McCarthy’s credit card analogy, yes, you should sit down and talk with your child about future spending. But what you wouldn’t tell your child is to not pay the credit card tab already accrued. That bill is courtesy of military spending, Social Security and Medicare benefits, tax refunds and other U.S. obligations. The fight over McCarthy’s speakership foreshadowed the challenges ahead for House governance and the repercussions for the nation.
