His departure is effective Friday, when many other Union-Tribune employees will be leaving as part of a buyout program offered by the new owner.
A veteran journalist whose newspaper career spans four decades, Light, 62, joined the Union-Tribune in March 2010 as its top editor and in 2016 was also made publisher. He grew up in Buffalo, N.Y., where his father was editor of the local newspaper and before arriving at the Union-Tribune, worked at the Orange County Register for 17 years, serving as deputy editor and then vice president for interactive publishing.
It is unknown at this time who will take over Light’s role. Current managing editor Lora Cicalo will remain in charge of the newsroom as a succession plan for Light’s duties is formulated, the Union-Tribune staff was told in a video call with a representative of the new ownership. While Alden Global Capital owns the Union-Tribune, it will be managed by Alden affiliate MediaNewsGroup under a management services agreement. The Denver-based group, which owns roughly 200 publications, is the parent company of the Southern California News Group papers. Its portfolio includes the Orange County Register, Los Angeles Daily News, Riverside Press-Enterprise, Long Beach Press-Telegram, San Gabriel Valley Tribune and Pasadena Star-News.
Hasse sought to reassure the Union-Tribune staff that the new ownership remains committed to journalism at a time when the industry has and will continue to be buffeted by headwinds.
