Lois Grayson had sent the company clear details of the final meter readings, but ended up being harassed by debt collectors
A woman who sent EDF Energy a final meter reading when a tenant moved out of her house and expected to get a bill for around £150 was instead sent one for £1,118 and spent seven months fighting off debt collectors. Dr Lois Grayson sent EDF her readings when the tenant moved out of a home in Cardiff.
Dr Grayson said: "I think other people might be being bullied into paying this. My opinion altered to it being incompetence at first to systematic harassment over seven months. I started by thinking 'everyone makes mistakes' to thinking they were being complete bullies." The property was unoccupied for four months until April 2023 whilst it was being refurbished and, during that period, Dr Grayson repeatedly contacted EDF with contact details for her, with her Cornwall address and with interim gas and electricity readings. Nobody was using the property.
"I made six calls between February and April but still these hugely overestimated bills kept coming. And even though I provided them with my residential address on several occasions, they kept sending letters to the address in Wales. She added: "I'm a psychologist so I'm pretty resilient and emotionally capable and if I can't withstand the barrage of constant harassment then other people they are doing this to must feel even worse."
