The grants are part of a £13.5million government drive to boost volunteering through museums, social enterprises, libraries, museums arts groups, charities and artist-led workshops in disadvantaged areas

Burnley’s libraries has been given £88,000 by The Arts Council England to develop volunteering opportunities and support people experiencing social isolation. The town’s Mid-Pennine Arts has been awarded £40,000 from Historic England to open creative spaces for people who do not usually have access to them.

“This funding will mean those in some of the most disadvantaged areas across the country are able to volunteer in an area that interests them.” Funding will allow the libraries to build on Burnley’s local collections through exhibitions and activities with a focus on the history of industry and football. Sessions will be developed for parents, veterans, carers, and teenagers at risk of chronic loneliness to improve their life chances.

One of these grants is £40,000 to Mid Pennine Arts for its ‘Welcome Burnley’ project which will enable new creative spaces to open up. Mid Pennine Arts hopes to increase participation by individuals and target groups who normally may not have access to such opportunities.
