More about about why Dylan O'Brien didn't return for Teen Wolf: The Movie have been revealed. 'He made the right decision for himself. He’s gotta do what creatively feeds him. He did that character for six seasons.'
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Teen Wolf: The Movie. Creator Jeff Davis reveals more details about Dylan O'Brien return talks for Teen Wolf: The Movie. The McCall Pack returns, but it's missing Stiles Stilinski. Scott's best friend was a beloved member of his group, so it was disappointing when it was revealed that he wouldn't be in the reunion project.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a new interview with TV Insider in light of Paramount+'s reunion movie's release, Davis reveals that there was a point in the development of the project wherein O'Brien's beloved character, Stiles was going to be involved. That being said, after a few more discussions, they decided that it was best for everyone if he opted out of the Teen Wolf Movie entirely given the circumstances.
We had ideas written down, nothing that ever passed an outline stage. There was one moment where he said, “OK, maybe I’ll do a cameo.” Then another moment where he said, “Maybe I’ll do a few days of shooting.” But at a certain moment in the process I said, we’ve either gotta have him in it or not in it. And I think he made the right decision for himself. He’s gotta do what creatively feeds him. He did that character for six seasons.
In reality, O'Brien declined the Teen Wolf Movie because he wasn't comfortable joining the project that he felt was rushed. He didn't get into specifics about the discussions, but Davis' revelation establishes that the decision didn't come lightly. In fact, both parties tried to make it work; unfortunately, they just couldn't. Amid all of this, however, O'Brien isn't totally closing the door to reprising Stiles moving forward.
Aside from O'Brien's eagerness to revisit his role as Stiles in the Teen Wolf universe, Lydia's revelation could also be the jumping point for another Teen Wolf: The Movie. Davis has previously revealed that there have been discussions about doing more films as part of the franchise's expansion on Paramount+. By then, hopefully, O'Brien can finally return as Stiles.
