The DWP is urging people to check to see if they can claim an additional benefit amid the cost of living crisis
People are being urged not to ‘miss out’ on extra benefits worth around £67 each week, the Department for Work and Pensions has warned. The government department responsible for distributing benefits and pensions is urging people to check if they are eligible for financial support worth thousands of pounds each year.
The DWP sent an alert out on X on Wednesday encouraging people to check their eligibility for pension credit. A post from its official account said: “Don't miss out on #PensionCredit. Around 1.4 million households are already claiming. Check your eligibility and apply online today. #HelpForHouseholds".
Previously the DWP said many do not claim the cash as they wrongly believe that because they have savings or own their own home they would not be eligible for Pension Credit. Almost a million people are currently missing out on the benefit, Liverpool Echo reports.READ MORE: HMRC warning to anyone waiting for £300 cost of living payment as texts sent out
It’s important that people claim Pension Credit if they can as it’s thought to be worth around £3,500 per year, or around £67 each week. It is often referred to as a "passport" benefit as once a person is claiming they can then get access to freebies and other money-saving schemes.DWP previously highlighted a number of barriers that stop people claiming Pension Credit. To check your entitlement, phone the Pension Credit helpline on 0800 99 1234 or use the GOV.
