The DWP increased the benefit by £148 this month

There are over 10 million people in Britain dedicating their time to looking after others, entirely unpaid. Many of these people are eligible for government benefits such as Universal Credit and the Carer's Allowance, but around 500,000 people are missing out on a top-up benefit designed to help with the extra costs of providing care - the carer premium.

Many people are unaware that they do not have to claim Carer's Allowance in order to receive the carer premium, which was designed to ensure that people with caring responsibilities do not miss out on extra money if their benefit or pension payments push them over the threshold to claim. An example of a group that could be missing out on the extra cash would be older couples, where one person has to spend their time caring for the other.

The carer premium can affect the benefits of the person you are caring for, so if you are paid the premium and do not qualify for the carer's allowance, their money could be reduced. This mainly affects the Severe Disability Premium that some are able to claim, but carers are advised to speak to a welfare adviser if they are concerned about this.
