Bereaved Support Payment and Widowed Parent’s Allowance were previously only available to parents who were married or in a civil partnership
A 90-day warning has been issued by the Department for Work and Pensions over a huge change to benefit backdating rules which could see people owed thousands of pounds.
Now, the eligibility criteria has been extended to also include couples who were cohabiting and had dependent children back in February of this year. The DWP opened a 12-month window for cohabitating parents to backdate their claims and the deadline ends on February 8, 2024.The amount you can claim will depend on when your partner died. If they died on or after April 6, 2017, then you might be able to claim Bereavement Support Payment.
The earliest point payments can be backdated to is August 30, 2018, so you could claim around five years' worth of payments. You also would have needed to qualify for either payment on this date to be eligible for the backdated payments.
