The most under-claimed benefit, specifically aimed at providing additional financial support for older people on a low income - singles and couples, is Pension Credit.
Older people living alone might be eligible for a Department for Work and Pensions income boost of nearly £4,000 this year. According to the Office for National Statistics, in 2021, about 3.3 million people aged 65 and over were living alone in England and Wales.
The quickest way to check eligibility for Pension Credit, reports the Daily Record, is by using the online Pension Credit calculator on GOV.UK here. At the moment, Pension Credit boosts your income to at least £201.05 per week if you're single and £306.85 per week if you're a couple. If you have a disability or caring responsibilities, you could get more.
Changes for mixed age older couples and Pension Credit. In May 2019, the rules changed for 'mixed age couples' - where one partner is of State Pension age and the other isn't. Now, when checking if you can get means-tested benefits, you're seen as a 'working age' couple. Next, follow the link to the application page to find out exactly what you will get from the DWP, including access to other financial support.
