Take sand dunes, whale sounds, and some creative work with a microphone, and you might just come up with the year’s most celebrated movie monster.
in the Mojave Desert in late 2019, you might have spotted a man dragging a microphone through the sand, or perhaps a team setting off little sand avalanches to see how they moved. It may not have looked like it then, but these expert teams were building a massive monster for—the sandworm—director Denis Villeneuve and his Oscar-nominated team had to create a new version of the immense and menacing desert creature while staying loyal to Frank Herbert’s original text.
Designing the computer-generated worm wasn’t nearly as challenging for production VFX supervisor Paul Lambert as “trying to get this thing to move.” He and his team spent almost a year figuring out how the creature would travel through sand, researching every known worm and limbless reptile of land and sea. “We tested body undulations of an earthworm, for example, or the slight side-to-side movement of a snake pushing through sand,” Lambert said.
So they shifted their focus to a much bigger animal: the whale. “As the sandworm went through the sand, it was like it was carving the sea. It was cresting, breaching, and smashing its way through,” Lambert said, adding that the design of the mouth was inspired by a whale’s baleen. The sand ripples created by the worm, meanwhile, were Villeneuve’s nod to a different sea creature: “It’s technicallyThe sound of real desert sand was one of many elements that created the sandworm’s signature groan.
As for the man dragging the microphone across the sand, that was Green, learning how to create a chasing sound for the worm. “In the desert when you are alone in the middle of nowhere, sand sometimes avalanches off the side of the sand dune and you get these strange moaning, groaning sounds,” Green said. “So I’d sort of made a combination of these moaning, groaning sounds and sand rushing.”
The first time the film’s hero, Paul, played by Timothée Chalamet, witnesses the true size and might of a sandworm comes when he watches one of them devour an entire spice crawler, the machines used to collect the invaluable desert resource. For that pivotal action sequence, the team needed the worm to emit a sucking noise. Mangini took that task into his own hands, or mouth rather, by sticking a microphone down his throat. “I sucked for as long as I had lung power for,” he said.
