Villeneuve teases a big Lady Jessica Dune 2 twist.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Spoilers for Frank Herbert's Dune and, likely, Dune: Part Two.Despite the strike-related delays plaguing Dune: Part Two, visionary director Denis Villeneuve continues to entice viewers by teasing a shocking Lady Jessica twist that may play out in the highly-anticipated sequel film. Played in both parts of the Dune duology by Rebecca Ferguson, Lady Jessica, a Bene Gesserit acolyte, is more than just Paul Atreides' mother.
However, in Frank Herbert's Dune universe, Lady Jessica's lineage is also something of note. In order to capitalize on this, Villeneuve has confirmed Dune 2's major Lady Jessica story change. Notably, the book's version of the character undergoes a ritual to become a Reverend Mother, causing the child she's pregnant with to be born with an adult mind as well as the memories of past Bene Gesserit women.
The Harkonnens’ Larger Role In Dune 2 Sets Up A Jessica Harkonnen Twist Previously, Villeneuve teased the Harkonnens having a larger presence in Dune 2. Giving the excitement surrounding Austin Butler's portrayal of the cruel, calculating Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, it seems audiences are eager for House Atreides' rivals to have more screen time. In Dune: Part One, Stellan Skarsgård's Baron Vladimir Harkonnen makes a chilling entrance, as does his out-for-blood nephew Glossu Rabban .
While the Harkonnens play an integral role in Dune, Villeneuve's interest in more deeply exploring the family's lineage and hierarchy also sets up a shocking Lady Jessica twist. In the Prelude to Dune books, a trilogy penned by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, it's revealed that Lady Jessica's mentor, Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, is also her biological mother.
The galaxy builds its power structures based on the principle that good leadership is inherited, as both returning and new Dune 2 characters prove. The feuding Harkonnens and Atreides share this fundamental principle about the importance of hereditary traits. The reveal undercuts the houses' feud: Paul is technically descended from both bloodlines. However, the most crucial impact is an emotional one.
