The Elite Eight will be the third matchup between Duke and NC State this season, all coming in a seven-game stretch.
DALLAS — held on to beat 54-51 on Friday night in the NCAA Tournament, sending the Blue Devils to their second Elite Eight in the past three seasons. This time, they’ll see a longtime in-state and ACC rival: No. 11 seed NC State on Sunday. A game-tying 3-point attempt from Houston’s in the final seconds was short and off the mark. The ball went out of bounds to Duke, giving the Blue Devils their escape.
Duke took the lead late in the first half and never trailed again. Shead came out with the team for the second half but didn’t warm up and was unable to go. He spent the second half with a sweatshirt on, head often in his hands. He was just 1 of 5 from the field, but his three assists still led the Cougars in the game. Despite the loss of Shead, Houston’s vaunted defense helped keep the Cougars within arm’s length. Duke never led by more than six points.
