Alamo City residents hoping for a winter wonderland this season might be disappointed.

Saul Cortez uses a leaf blower to remove snow from his car Feb. 18, 2021. Although a warmer, drier winter is forecast here, San Antonio should keep an eye on the weather, as winter storms do pop up.San Antonians hoping for a winter wonderland this season might be disappointed.

As of Monday, the region has received only 11.20 inches of rain. This is nearly 20 inches below the average rainfall activity for San Antonio, making this year the second-driest on record. The city would need to receive an additional 2.5 inches to fall out of second place, which seems unlikely, said Keith White, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in New Braunfels.

These drier and warm conditions are mostly due to La Niña, a global weather phenomenon that results in higher temperatures and less rainfall in Texas and other parts of the southern United States. The La Niña pattern is expected to continue until next year, but there are hints of El Niño next fall and winter, which generally means lower temperatures and more precipitation in San Antonio.
