Drivers over 70 risk fine and having car seized if they don't get new driving licence
Motorists aged 70 and over are being urged to keep on top of their licence amid warnings they could be fined or even have their vehicle seized.
Drivers aged 70 and over must renew their licence every three years or face action from the DVLA, Wales Online reports. Motorists can use an online service to renew their licence if aged 70 or over, or will be 70 in the next 90 days, and if their licence has expired or is due to within 90 days. Those aged over 70 can renew their licence as long as they meet the minimum eyesight requirement of being able to read a car number plate made after 1 September 2001 from 20 metres, and if they aren't prevented from driving for any reason including if they suffer from certain medical conditions. There are around 10 million drivers aged 70 and above in the UK, according to a recent figure estimate. People who don't get a renewal but carry on driving will be committing a serious offence.
Offences of this nature carry a maximum fine of £1,000, and even a seized vehicle. In order to avoid this, there is a form you can fill out ahead of time. 90 days before your 70th birthday the DVLA will send you a form, D46P application. If they don't send you one, you can also get a form from your Post Office.READ NEXT:
