Motorists who drive with their dog in the car could face fines of up to £5,000 for breaching the Highway Code.

The rule states that pets should be “suitably restrained” when travelling in the car to keep them safe if drivers are forced to stop quickly. Rule 57 of the Highway Code states:"When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly.So, although the image of a dog with its head out the window with its tongue out and ears fluttering in the wind is a very enjoyable one, it can actually land you in the doghouse with the law and result in a fine of up to £5,000.
