Plans to downgrade the unit were outlined in the ‘Neonatal Intensive Care Options Appraisal Report’ by the Scottish Government which was published in July this year.
South Lanarkshire councillors voted for a motion calling for the protection of the neonatal intensive care unit at University Hospital Wishaw after concerns about the facility being downgraded arose.
He warned that closing the award-winning facility would affect hundreds of families across Lanarkshire. "This will mean ultimately the downgrading of the established neonatal intensive care unit at University Hospital Wishaw, which is an award-winning neonatal unit. Families have already expressed significant concerns about these changes through an online petition which has been signed by over 16,000 people. This goes to show that the neonatal unit is nationally recognised for its sterling work and only this year it was awarded the multidisciplinary team of the year.
Councillor Handibode supported the proposals and also highlighted the devastating impact of downgrading the facility would have. She said: “I come to this from a bit of a personal angle, I am a mum of a premature baby, Erin was born at 34 weeks and we were lucky enough that Erin was strong enough to not need the neonatal unit or the intensive care unit. But I’ve had the experience of the fear and the pain of having a baby at such an early gestation.
