The bomb cyclone that pummeled much of the country last weekend leaving a deadly toll in its wake, underscores the myriad of safety hazards that can be wrought by a single weather event. In hindsight, much depends on being proactive.

The not-so-good news: the brunt of winter is still ahead. The likelihood the region will see at least one, if not two, more winter weather events this season is high.

Bomb cyclones are still relatively rare, although they have become a weather event buzz phrase, Dangelo noted. The fact is winter storms are likely to be in the forecast for much of the nation. The lowest recorded temperature at Harrisburg International Airport was 4 degrees on Saturday morning. “This storm was different. The winds continued to howl. We were fixing outages and picking up new ones along the way. We would get some restored and a short time later, there would be another batch of outages.”The main culprit this time was the wind knocking down trees or limbs onto power lines.

“This was a generational storm,” Meyers said. “It was not the usual storm. It was forecast to be brutal and it certainly delivered as advertised.”“I called that night around 9. They answered the phone,” Burkholder said. “They said they would have someone out first thing in the morning.”“We usually get a few calls over the holidays,” said Jake Handyside. “We ended up getting hundreds of calls. Most was for frozen pipes. People didn’t have water to the entire house or sections of the house.

“The biggest thing we can all learn when these things happen is to be proactive and look for ways to insulate our houses better,” Handyside said. “It will save you money on energy throughout the year and prevent these things from happening when these extreme weather conditions happen.”Meyers notes the utility company prepares systemwide before winter and homeowners should do the same.
