“They show up, bands and all of it, do their job, take in the entertainment and then they leave without care or concern without people in the community. We are left with whatever they left, we still have the same neglected park.”
Three festivals and several weeks later, Douglass Park is now fully open to the public.
“Not only our children are pushed out of the park because of the festivals, but then you think about fall sports,” said Anton Adkins, who lives across from Douglass Park. “[The fields] are badly used and I don’t think that those teams deserve to play in such a space like that.” Even though the park is fully open now, Elvia Rodriguez Ochoa, director of education and engagement with Friends of the Parks, said kids don’t really get a chance to use the park because they’re back to school and there’s less sunlight.
Under fire from residents, the Chicago Park District is planning to adopt a new rule requiring approval from its board of commissioners for events that bring over 10,000 attendees. In addition, there must be a community engagement process for public input on pending permit applications.

Pussy Riot Frontwoman Nadya Tolokonnikova on Ukraine, Abortion, And InspirationPussy Riot is not a band, despite what you might have heard to the contrary. While it’s true that Pussy Riot releases music — and plays festivals, as they are at Life Is Beautiful in Las Vegas — frontwoman Nadya Tolokonnikova is quick to clarify that the mission is bigger than that. Pussy Riot is a feminist protest collective; the group raises money for Ukrainian creatives, participates in NFT and Web 3.0 projects, and staged a protest for reproductive rights at the Texas state capitol earlier this summer. Tolokonnikova, who served nearly two years in prison over an anti-Putin performance in 2012, is as vocal as ever in the face of escalating censorship — as well as her status as a registered foreign agent against Vladimir Putin’s government.
