First Nations people live on the front lines and the cost of forest fires has been especially hard on our people.
They say that there are three phases in the climate crisis. The first is to deny it: “It’s all a hoax.” The second is to declare that it’s too expensive. This is the phase we’re entering now. The third and final stage is to simply throw up your hands and declare that it’s too late.
Carbon dioxide, a bi-product of the burning of fossil fuels, is the main cause of global warming. The opposition from provinces with coal and petroleum industries is based purely on short-term economics. It’s their attempt to monetize and sprint the last few metres to Armageddon. Instead, we need to decarbonize our economy.
The old smokestack and tailpipe era will be a thing of the past if we are to survive. Someday the internal combustion engine will be like the steam engine, nostalgic and romantic but polluting and inefficient.. It should be renamed the “climate crisis tax” and spent on costs associated with damage created by the climate crisis. This would include firefighting, flood emergencies, evacuations and other climate-related catastrophes.
In this manner the carbon tax would be more defined and still be a tax on the burning of fossil fuels. The tax would constitute a penalty for the burning of fossil fuels but further a fund that would be set aside for emergency training, firefighting and other specialized functions associated with the climate crisis.Article contentIt’s been said that this year will be the best of the years to follow.
