About 30 years ago, some business leaders invited a team of college architects to the community of four municipalities on the southern peninsula of New Jersey Shore towns to give them advice on how to market themselves.had first introduced the song and dance “The Twist” in the early 60s in a club in Wildwood. Bill Hailey and the Comets first played the iconic hit “Rock Around the Clock” here in the 1950s.
“It gives us our uniqueness,” said Ben Rose, director of marketing and public relations for the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Authority. “It’s similar to South Beach when they went Art Deco. Art Deco is to South Beach what Doo Wop architecture is to Wildwood.”Despite the renewed interest in the Doo Wop design, Preservation New Jersey in 2005 listed the nearly 200 remaining structures there as endangered.
The 2,500 square-foot Doo Wop Museum in Wildwood is filled with relics, including neon signs and furniture from the era. The redevelopment of the Wildwoods has been gradual. One key addition was the opening of a 260,000-square-foot convention center in 2002 that helped make the area a year-round destination.
